The flood season refers to periods of high precipitation, such as the rainy season and typhoon season (mainly from June to October). Therefore, just before the flood season, the water level of the dam lake is lowered to prepare for flooding.

Some dams have more detailed time periods than others. For example, the Muromaki Dam in Toyama Prefecture runs from 6/21 to 9/30, dams directly under the Abukuma River system run from 6/11 to 10/10, the Ren Dam in rain-prone Mie Prefecture from 6/16 to 10/31, and the Okura Dam in Miyagi Prefecture from 7/1 to 9/30.
