The best rural scenery in Japan, a female lord of a castle...such an image is attached to the town of Iwamura. This may be due to the influence of the signboards here and there. But I think "Japan's best farming village scenery" is an accurate description. The atmosphere is very tranquil, with an old man strolling near the dam and casually saying hello to me.

So, the location is a little hard to explain, but if you are driving on Route 363, you will probably be able to find it by relying on the signs. However, it is quite a distance from the national highway.

Completed in 1997, it is quite new and well maintained. However, there are very few visitors, probably because it is quite far from the main street. So it is very quiet.

It is a small dam, but it is very high. I wanted to look up the embankment from the downstream side, but the road to that side was closed, so I had to give up.

It is covered by a fence, perhaps to prevent large pieces of trash from entering and clogging the gate.

You can freely look inside the control room, which is not so easy to see. It is a bit impressive.

The dam lake is also quite small enough to be seen in its entirety. The white concrete slope in front appears to be where boats stored in a warehouse on the left bank are towed in and lowered into the dam lake.

Other facilities/observations

I heard that if you visit on a weekday, you can get an explanation of the dam, but you probably need to make an appointment. I remember that when I visited the Iwamura Dam in winter, I had to go down a steep slope on my way back to the dam, and when I thought the brakes were working, I slipped and had a near-miss. Please be careful when you drive.

By the way, there is "Oyone-san's store" along Route 257 in Iwamura-cho, and the pickles "chrysanthemum" sold there are quite delicious. How about buying some as a souvenir on your way back from a visit to the Iwamura Dam?
