Fujikogawa Dam is located in Sekigahara-cho, Gifu Prefecture, which is famous for the Battle of Sekigahara. It is located close to the site of the battle, and is surrounded by the ruins of the camps of famous military commanders such as Hideie Ukita, Yoshitsugu Otani, Yukinaga Konishi, and Yoshihiro Shimazu. I visited there during the Bon vacation when I went back to my wife's parents' home.

Road to Fujikogawa Dam

If you want to go near the dam by car, approach from the left bank side. What? Here! You have to enter the road (on the left side). You can also approach from the right bank, but there seems to be no space to park your car and the grass is quite overgrown, so it is better not to do so.

If you drive along the narrow dirt road, you will come to the location in the photo below, so park where you will not be disturbed and move on foot. The tomb of Otani Yoshitsugu seems to be located beyond this point, but a map shows that it is beyond the Fujikogawa Dam.

The Fujikogawa Dam is an important water source dam for the town of Sekigahara, and the Fujikogawa Water Filtration Plant can be seen in the background. Because it is an important water supply facility, it is naturally off-limits.

A stone monument commemorating the completion of the Fujikogawa Dam and water supply facilities was set up across the road.

Fujikogawa Dam
Sekigahara-cho's water supply is a tap water system that uses river water. To prevent water shortages in summer, a dam was built to store water. The Fujikogawa Dam was built in 1963. It is 16 meters high and 78 meters long, with a water storage capacity of 125,000 m3.

From the local sign

Although it is mid-summer with strong sunlight, it does not feel that hot, perhaps because the trees are thick and create shadows, and the reservoir is full of water.

The top edge of the structure is raised near the gate.

View of the intake tower from the top

This is the intake tower where water is pumped to the water purification plant. The Fujikogawa River has its source on the south side of Mt. Ibuki, and after passing through the Fujikogawa Dam, it joins the Makita River and the Hangase River before joining the Ibi River.

Top edge of elevated portion

As this is a gateless dam, there is no hoist. There is a concrete lid in the center of the dam, which may be pried open for inspection or repair, and a corner fall may be inserted here.

Looking downstream from the top

Unfortunately, the embankment cannot be seen from downstream. It is rare to see pictures of the Fujikogawa Dam taken from downstream, but my stance is not to take any chances when visiting the dam.

The reservoir is not very large.

Looking right bank side from the highest point of the top edge

The other side of the river is so overgrown with grass that it is hard to tell at a glance if there is a road ahead.

right bank (shore)

We managed to get through, but it was like a dense jungle and there were cobwebs all over the place, so we decided not to 😓 Not to force ourselves, but not to (ry)

Still, I managed to find a point where I could see the downstream face and extend my arm over the fence, but unfortunately this was the best I could do.

The same is true of the upstream face. It is almost impossible to see.

It is almost symmetrical, or the top of the top edge looks similar whether viewed from the left or right bank.

The water is flowing smoothly, but it is interesting to note that the conduit is almost vertical.

Fujikogawa Dam overflow painting

The video is almost like a shot, but I tried to capture the overflow on video.

It was the Fujikogawa Dam, which is carefully used as an important water source dam for the town.
