After the wedding at Uchikura Dam, we all stayed at Tsukioka Onsen, and the next day we planned to go on a solo tour of dams in northern Niigata Prefecture. And so we came to the Tainai No. 2 Dam.

Tainai" comes from the Tainai River, which is also the name of a river, and it is an amazing name. According to Wikipedia, the origin of the name is as follows

There is a theory that the name "Tainai" is derived from the snow shape of Mt.

Incidentally, there is also a place called "Close" on the way from Tsukioka Onsen to Tainai No. 2 Dam, which is quite interesting.

Also on the Tainai River, in addition to this Tainai No. 2 Dam, there are the Tainai River Dam and Tainai No. 1 Dam, and at the far end is the Okutainai Dam, which was just completed in 2019. However, on the day we visited, the area beyond the Tainai No. 2 Dam was closed for the winter, so we were only able to visit this dam. (Moreover, the Oku-Tainai Dam was not yet completed at that time.)

Dam watchtower

This is not a dam control station but a dam watchtower. It is a small building. The Tainai No. 2 Dam is owned by the Niigata Prefectural Bureau of Public Enterprises, and water taken from this dam is used to generate electricity at the Tainai No. 2 Power Station located directly below the right bank of the dam.

Unfortunately, access to the top edge was prohibited.

The top edge railing appears low. It may not be open because its safety cannot be guaranteed.

You can see a building with a sharply angled roof at the top end (probably the intake gate winder room), but is the angle so steep because it is in a snowy area?

The Tainai No. 2 Dam, which has a roller gate at the crest, was discharging water on this day. It was discharging snow, probably due to the time of year. The gray building below is the Tainai No. 2 Power Station.

I was going to do this, but the trees were so thick that it was difficult to aim directly in front of the camera. The angle is a little too steep. It is a roller gate, but if you look closely, you can see that it is a roller gate.flash board(missing purification plate), and you can see them discharging from there as well.

The discharge scene of the day is summarized in the video.

The water is full. On top of that, it is clean and free of garbage because no one lives upstream.
