After participating in the 8th Dam Web Ring off-line meeting [off-line tour of dams on the Karasubara River by Shinto Railway], I headed to this Tenno Dam by myself. I was glad to have heard from the participants of the off-line meeting whether I could go there by car or not, but it was in the evening, so I took a rush shot (lol).

I set my destination in my car navigation system at a coin-operated parking lot at Suzurandai Station, thinking that I would be able to find the location by aiming for Tenno Dam Sports Garden. That got me there quickly.

It is strange that there is a baseball field on the dam lake side.

This photo was taken from inside the dam lake. It is a dam with a hole in it, so it rarely stores water, but this angle cannot be seen from ordinary places.

Incidentally, what you actually see in this photo now appears to be an orifice gate. It is not visible in this photo because it is submerged in water, but there is a gate with a hole under the orifice. Since the orifice is higher than expected, it seems that it does not store water at all.

This is located in Kita-ku, Kobe, in the southern part of Hyogo Prefecture (Minami-Rokko). Although the southern part of Hyogo Prefecture receives little rainfall, once heavy rains fall in the steep Rokko Mountains, the water volume increases at once and the river becomes a raging torrent. Therefore, during a heavy rainfall, the water volume will probably increase up to the embankment. Therefore, even though it is a perforated dam, an emergency flood discharge of the natural overflow type seems to have been installed in the crest.

The incident in July 2008 in which a child playing in a water park on the Tsuga River in Kobe's Nada Ward was swept away is probably still fresh in your mind, and that is why Kobe is in danger without such dams. It is Nothing to say that a dam is not a dam if it does not store water or that it is a waste!

As you can see, there was a small but reasonable amount of water stored. It was like letting nature take its course.

Now, time is pressing on, so we are moving to the top edge. I was quite lost to get to the top of the mountain. We could not get there by wandering around the park, and when we looked at the car navigation system, it seemed that we needed to leave the park and approach from the national highway.

I was told in advance that I could go to the skyline by car, but the route to the car was blocked by a line of cars, and I passed through without noticing, and I could not make a U-turn on an unfamiliar road, and if I took a back road, I could not get around it because of a right turn prohibition, and after wandering around a lot, I returned to the Ishii Bridge that I passed on the way back from the off-line meeting. After wandering around a lot, I ended up going back to Ishii Bridge, which I passed on the way back from the off-line meeting.

I decided to reset and go back north on Arima Kaido (Route 428), and finally arrived at Tenpata. Incidentally, I learned later that the road to Tenpata is actually forbidden to automobiles.... Sorry.

There are benches on the left bank for visitors, but the grass was quite overgrown, probably because few people visit. It would be nice if it were a little cleaner, since this is the time of year when silver grass is beautiful, but it looked a little rough. There was also a stone monument where a time capsule was supposedly buried, but it was covered with silver grass, and the person who actually buried it might be a little disappointed to see it.

The autumn leaves are very beautiful. I wanted to see it from downstream, but I did not know how to approach it from the national highway, so I passed by. The dam is probably designed to reduce the flow of water from the emergency flood discharge. The structure is quite solid.

I would love to see it more flooded. This surrounding area will be submerged. When it is submerged to that level, I am sure it will be the day when the Tenno Dam did its best.

It is still lonely when you are alone, but the loneliness is even greater in the evening.

The downstream side looks quite standard, but can you see the slit on the front side? Actually, thisemergency flood dischargeIt has a topside canal. This is supposed to be a no-no to make it function in case of emergency, but it will probably be used in a real, real emergency.

Wow, heavily shaky. I have a camera with image stabilizer, but it was too late in the evening for it to work.... I wanted to take a few more pictures of the canal at the top end, but the camera shake was too much....

It is a dam dedicated to flood control, so naturally it is unmanned.

I almost lost the entrance to the top edge from the left side, but the grass was so overgrown that I almost lost the entrance. I managed to get to the top edge from here, but it seems that not many people come here.

As part of the Shin-Minatogawa River Comprehensive Development Project, the Tenno Dam is being implemented with the Ishii Dam and another dam under preliminary investigation, as well as a plan to renovate the river to handle a 100-year probability of flooding. We hope that this will prevent accidents like the one on the Tsuga River.
