Also known as: Roller Compacted Dam-concrete
RCD stands for "Roller Compacted Dam-concrete" and is an application of RCC (Roller Compacted Concrete), a construction method originally used for airport runway pavement in the U.S. and road pavement in Japan, to dams.
Since the amount of cement is reduced, and ultra-hard concrete is smoothed by a bulldozer and compacted by vibratory rollers, more heavy equipment can be used than with conventional construction methods, and large quantities can be placed. It is becoming one of the mainstream construction methods for medium- and large-scale dams in recent years.
The RCD method also makes it possible to suppress the generation of heat of hydration (chemical reaction between cement and water) that causes cracking.
In Japan, the Miyagase Dam (0703-Miyagase Dam) in Kanagawa Prefecture, the Urayama Dam in Saitama Prefecture, and the Tsukiyama Dam in Yamagata Prefecture are examples of RCD construction.
