View of the dike from the parking lot on the right bank
To reach the Agigawa Dam, turn onto Route 257 from the Masaya intersection on Route 19 and go south. There are signs on Route 19, so it is easy to reach the dam.
It is a very large dam, and many people visit. Even though it was a weekday, there were people who looked like a couple on a picnic (although it looks like an affair), and others who stopped by on their way to take a break from business.
View of the selective intake tower from the right bank
The facilities are excellent, with stores, a very large parking lot, a park, exhibition facilities, and of course, restrooms. There is also a restaurant, but I am not sure if it is open or not. Anyway, it is such a large dam.
Models of various gates
First, we will go to the museum to learn about the Agigawa Dam. The well-made models move! But some of the models do not move. The room is very dark, and like the restaurant, it is hard to tell whether the museum is open or not. However, seeing that the exhibits are turned on, it seems that the museum is open "just in case". There were many people in the parking lot, but the museum was deserted.
Model of the area around the dike
I am very weak against this kind of models. I used to work making models for events, etc., many years ago, so I am deeply moved by them. This is the most beautiful and well-designed model of a dam I have ever covered.
Model of selective intake tower
This one didn't work, as I recall... It didn't move even when I pressed the button. I wonder if it is broken...
Inside the museum
There are also panels showing the ruins excavated during the construction and the history of the dam construction. Other than that, local confections of Ena City were also introduced.
View of the levee from the terrace of the museum
flap gate
This is a very beautiful silver flap gate. It has a very nice mechanical design.
Inside the gate operation room
A glimpse inside the gate operation room.
Flood discharge
The flood discharge is also very well designed. The sub-dam can be seen on the other side.
Downstream view of the levee from the flood discharge
It is very hard to believe that it is rock fill. The stones are beautifully assembled.

View of the dam lake from the left bank
In the foreground is the selective intake tower, and in the background is the Agigawa Bridge on Route 257. It is a little hard to see, but the fountain on the far left is not just a fountain, but a surface aeration facility to control plankton generated in the dam lake.
tunnel
I heard that fishing is allowed on the downstream side. When we went further back from the fishing spot, we found water flowing out of a tunnel....
tunnel nameplate
It is labeled "Agigawa Dam Spillway. It appears to have been a drainage tunnel. It seems that water is led through the tunnel from the selective intake tower of the dam lake to here.
View of the levee from downstream
It is overwhelmingly large when viewed from downstream. I would love to see it released.

Other facilities/observations
Parking lot | ○ | Please be sure to drive around the dam lake as well as the embankment. There is a water park, a putting golf course, cottages (where you can stay overnight, apparently), and a Free tennis courts (which no one uses...), etc. It's insanely fulfilling. I heard that Hida beef is available at the nearby Tono Farm. They also have a cave... (Thanx, Pastry!). |
