Also known as Hollow Gravity Dam
Abbreviation : Japanese style "HG" (English: Hollow-Gravity Dam)
*In the world formula, gravity arch, hollow gravity, and curved gravity dams are also described as "PG" as well as gravity dams.
A hollow gravity concrete dam is a gravity concrete dam with a hollowed-out embankment. It is sometimes simply called a hollow gravity dam. It looks almost the same as a gravity concrete dam.
Compared to gravity-type concrete dams, hollow gravity-type concrete dams not only have the economic advantages of requiring less concrete placement and transportation costs, but also have the advantage of being more stable than gravity-type concrete because the surface of the hollow dam is wider than that of gravity-type concrete.
Nowadays, concrete has become cheaper and the cost of formwork has increased, so hollow gravity concrete dams are no longer being built. There are no plans to build them in the future either.
As of November 2009, there are only 13 hollow gravity concrete dams existing in Japan, of which four are owned by Chubu Electric Power Company, making it the largest number of hollow gravity concrete dams in Japan by far.
Yokoyama Dam (1096-Yokoyama Dam) in Gifu Prefecture sometimes opens its interior to the public during the "Friendship with Forests and Lakes" event, and a visit is highly recommended.
