This is a report on the Iwaya Dam Rockfill Dam Fest on Sunday, July 28, 2019. It is more of an article where I only watched the inspection and discharge lol.
Spirited flyer
If you are interested in watching the video, please click here.
Incidentally, some parts of the video are difficult to hear due to equipment trouble, but you can hear two types of sirens: the Water Resources Agency discharge warning siren and the super-loud Chubu Electric Power Company siren.
Arrive at the temporary parking lot!
We left early in the morning and arrived at the temporary parking lot a little after 9:00. Since we were a little late, there were already a good number of people waiting in line for the shuttle bus.
Get a can badge with an illustration by Ma-ui Sensei (Inoue Sensei). You can get this when you park in the temporary parking lot.
Then board a shuttle bus to the main venue.
Shuttle van to the top end
At the main venue, we transferred further to a shuttle van to get to the top end. Naturally, the water level is high enough to reach the gate.
Inspection and discharge flood discharge deck
This is the reason I went to the top end first. We waited until it opened at 10:00 a.m. to secure a spot for the first 11:00 a.m. photo shoot. No one was waiting in line, though (lol).
Discharge from Gate Pier
After more than an hour of persistence, we were able to secure a good position.
View of Crestgate from Gate Pier
We were also able to photograph the moment of the discharge from the crest gate. The photo was taken after the start of the discharge, but the moment of the discharge wasvideoPlease refer to the following page for more information.
Main Venue
After the first release, we arrived by shuttle van to the main venue. The main venue was lined with stalls from local businesses and stores, and the smells were appetizing. If you shop here, you can participate in a raffle to win Iwaya Dam goods in a gara-pon. Of course I did. Also, "dam maniac" Miyajima-san and Maniaparel also had stalls.
At the venue, visitors can purchase Hoba Sushi, participate in a raffle, and head to the second photo spot.
The spoils of war
The loot we got this time. The "water increase" on the operation panel, a can badge, an Iwaya Dam tote bag, tracing paper from the days of the Water Resources Public Corporation, and a "discharge caution sign towel" by Aniaparel.
View of Iwaya Dam Power Plant from the left bank
This is a valuable sight that is not usually seen. Incidentally, the power plant building itself is housed underground.
Power plant discharge outlet
Even the gate is clearly visible.
Up the road on the left bank...
It is hot. Anyway, it is hot.
View of the flood discharge from the left bank
The crest gate is gradually approaching. It is hot and the slope is rather steep, but we are almost there!
Arriving at the second photo spot.
Illustrations of "Irastoya" are used here and there, which makes me laugh, but this kind of playful spirit is important.
View of the flood discharge from the second photo spot
This is a great viewpoint.
View downstream from the second photo spot
There is still a little time before the release of the fish, but we wait with excitement and thrill. But it was too hot to wait, so we just secured a spot and retreated to the stream and shade downstream until it was time to go.
Second inspection and discharge
It is the discharge that makes us forget such heat.
View of the conduit from the left bank
Everyone should come see this.
View of the stream crest from the left bank
There must be an optimum amount of discharge that produces this beautiful stream pattern.
View of the flood discharge from the shade of a tree on the left bank
Although many of the children's voices have been incorporated into the video, it was very impressive to see them happily watching the release of the fish. Then we headed to the last photo spot.
View of the levee from Iwaya Bridge
3回目の放流は下流に架かる岩屋橋からです。ここからだと堤体下流面をしっかりと観ることができます。しかし相変わらず暑いのと、ハチが飛んでてやや戦々恐々😂

The third discharge began. A few moments after the discharge began, the Chubu Electric Power Company's discharge warning siren was sounded. Since the siren was located nearby, it sounded extremely loud. It was probably the loudest siren I have ever heard. The sound is captured perfectly in the video.
View of the photo spot from the 2nd time from Iwaya Bridge
People look that small.
View of the flood discharge from the Iwaya Bridge
You can see that the tip of the flood discharge is closer to the right bank and has a structure attached to it to allow water to flow.
Discharge warning sign by the Iwaya Bridge
After the third discharge, we leave the Iwaya Bridge and head home. On the way home, we review the difference in the way the sirens are sounded by the Water Resources Agency and Chubu Electric Power Company at the discharge warning signs.
I felt that not only the Water Resources Agency but also the local people of Gero City put a lot of effort into this event. I really hope that the event will be held again next year and beyond. When it is held, let's all go!
To the Water Resources Agency, Chubu Electric Power Company, and the people of Gero City. Thank you very much.
