February 21, 2024 was a drizzly and rainy day. Hi, it's time for the dam log.

On the day of the event, we took the subway to the Tokai branch office of Kansai Electric Power Co. I get off at Takatake Station on the Nagoya City Subway Sakuradori Line. It may have been 27 years since I got off at this station. I remember that my former teacher from my school days (though we were not close enough to call it that) had an office nearby and I went there to visit him.

Very stylish office building & close to the station! Even if it rains, you almost don't need an umbrella. Moreover, there is a convenience store on the first floor. Kansai Electric Power Company Tokai Branch is located in such a place.

When I arrived and fumbled with the receptionist's intercom, an employee took care of me and showed me around. I was then taken directly to the reception room. From the window of the reception room, you can see the Nagoya Expressway below and the Sakae and Meieki area. The bookshelves are lined with company histories and histories of hydraulic technology, and there is a large oil painting depicting the Okuwa Power Plant on the wall.

In the meantime, the branch manager and the general manager entered the room and greeted us. Wow, I didn't expect such senior executives to be here! Although I was nervous, we talked about our main business and the atmosphere was friendly from start to finish, which helped me to relax before the lecture began.

He was then ushered into the hall and finally began his lecture.

I had a lot of trouble with the theme, but I decided on this one! Momosuke Fukuzawa and dams.

I was really worried about what kind of presentation I should give in front of professionals in my profession. Even at the beginning of the presentation, I insured that I knew what I was talking about💦.

The first half of the session was spent introducing myself and providing topics on my most recent dam activities, while also showing how much I love Momosuke Fukuzawa (lol).

Incidentally, about 30 people attended the event at the venue, but it was also held on Zoom at the same time, with nearly 100 people in attendance if you include them.

The second half of the presentation will introduce some of the great points of the dams (Oi Dam and Ochiai Dam) that Momosuke was associated with.

I won't go into the substance of the lecture, but I managed to finish it.

Finally, it was time for a Q&A session. The branch manager was asked a question directly by the president of the company, and he is now slurring his words.

One week before the lecture, it was the anniversary of Momosuke Fukuzawa's death, and this year was the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Oi Dam, so I was truly honored to be invited to speak on such a memorable day.

Afterwards, I was shown the results of a questionnaire compiled by the secretariat, and I was glad to hear these comments from people in my profession, and my eyes lit up with joy at having given the lecture.

  • I now have a broader perspective on how to look at dams.
  • It was useful to get some tips on how to promote the attractiveness of hydroelectric power generation.
  • I was able to learn about the greatness of the Oi Dam, which I deal with in my daily work.
  • He also introduced some of the items he had been involved in, and I was impressed that he was looking at even the smallest of things.
  • It was an opportunity to rediscover the appeal of dams.
  • It was very meaningful to hear about dams and related facilities from a different perspective from that of employees. I would like to link this to customer guidance and the creation of new value.
  • This was helpful in communicating the attractiveness of hydropower projects in the future.

Thank you very much for giving us this valuable opportunity! Please do not hesitate to contact us again if you have another opportunity.

bonus

I was even given a pamphlet and other valuable souvenirs. The lecturer had prepared bottled water for us to quench our thirst, but we did not expect it to be Kurobe's glacial bamboo shoots water! I did not drink it during the lecture, but I finally realized that it was Kurobe's glacial bamboo shoot water when I was told after the lecture that it was Kurobe's glacial bamboo shoot water. Since I was there, I took it home as a souvenir (lol).

The highlight of the event was the appearance of our cat on the big screen 🤣🤣🤣.
