An emergency flood discharge is a gate that prevents overflow of a dam during a flood. It is used in the event of a flood that is too large to be discharged by the normal flood discharge. In most cases, the emergency flood discharge is located near the top of the embankment. In recent levees, gates called "natural (free) overflow type" are increasingly being used, which do not use steel gates and allow the water to overflow naturally when it reaches its level.
In addition, "nonordinary flood dischargemeans "not in regular use" rather than "emergency use" (i.e., "non/regular use").
