A temporary drainage tunnel is a kind of detour tunnel that is dug from upstream to downstream of a dam site during dam construction to divert overflowing upstream water downstream by damming the river. It is one of the temporary drainage channels.

They are constructed to prevent overflows, to prevent the river from becoming a waterless river downstream, and to keep construction sites dry.

Usually most are closed after the dam is completed.

At some existing dams, the remains of blocked temporary drainage tunnels can be seen.
