Hatsumode (New Year's visit) to Jishui-jinja Shrine

This article can be read in about 2 minutes to read.

Not that I have not been to a dam since December, but I had some free time at the beginning of the year, so my family and I paid a visit to the Josui Shrine in Kaizu City, Gifu Prefecture, to pray for flood control and the safety of all dam operators.

Josui-jinja Shrine is dedicated to Hirata Utsugi, a Satsuma Domain retainer who was responsible for the Kiso San-river diversion project (Horeki flood control) undertaken by the Satsuma Domain at the behest of the Edo Shogunate, as well as to the Satsuma Domain samurai.

It has a sad history that after the construction, many feudal warriors committed suicide to take responsibility for the huge amount of money spent and the deaths of many feudal warriors, and it was built by the local people in 1938 to enshrine them.

It is believed to bring blessings for family safety, traffic safety, and protection against water hazards.

Shinmon Gate of Flood Control Shrine

They say the gates are open between 9am and 4pm. It was closed when I visited the temple before, but it may have been after hours.

It was a stone statue of a local famous person with a bird on his head, like a chonmage... (laughs)

The temple also offers sacred cards and amulets at the awarding office on the temple grounds.

This is the official homepage of Jisui Shrine, a symbol of the honoring of the Yoshifumi Satsuma and the exchange between Gifu and Kagoshima. The website includes information on the history of the shrine, the history of honoring the Yoshifumi Satsuma, and the relationship between Gifu and Kagoshima.

Flood Control Shrine Location

The parking lot is located northwest of the shrine building, but it is a bit difficult to find, so it may be easier to park at the Nagara riverbed parking lot and walk there.
