The Japan Dam Awards 2014 were held at Culture Culture in Odaiba, Tokyo, on Saturday, December 27, and the awards were announced: the Discharge Award, Event Award, Low Water Management Award, Project Award, Flood Control Award, and Dam Grand Prize.
Let's start with the nominations for each award.
■Discharge Award
1. Yuda Dam (Iwate Prefecture)
For the first time, a crest release took place.
2. Urayama Dam (Saitama Prefecture)
A light-up discharge took place.
3.0692-Ogouchi Dam/Ogouchi Dam (Tokyo, Japan)
4.0612-Yagisawa Dam (Gunma Prefecture)
5.0623-Naramata Dam (Gunma Prefecture)
The Yagisawa and Naramata dams were the first test releases in four years, and the Yagisawa dam attracted as many as 1,200 tourists.
6. Takizawa Dam (Saitama Prefecture)
For the first time, a crest release took place.
7. Sonohara Dam (Gunma Prefecture)
The water was released from the ski jump flood discharge.
8.1075-Kuse Dam (Gifu Prefecture)
The full gate was open due to an alternative discharge caused by an inspection.
9.0853-Touri Dam (Ishikawa Prefecture)
The water was released from the Howell Banger valve.
10.Yubari Shuparo Dam(Hokkaido)
Test water discharge was conducted through test flooding in preparation for the completion of construction.
■Event Awards
1. Toyohirakyo Dam (Hokkaido)
We were able to observe the valve discharging at close range during the tour.
2. 4 Kinugawa River dams (Tochigi Prefecture)
Tours and other events were held.
3. Urayama Dam (Saitama Prefecture)
In addition to the tours, groundbreaking events were held, including a Marching Giants event (cosplay and painted car meeting).
4.1096-Yokoyama Dam (Gifu Prefecture)
The 50th anniversary of Yokoyama Dam was commemorated with events, the start of dam curry sales, and a grand stamp rally that included the downstream area.
5.1108-Yahagi Dam (Yahagi Daiichi Dam) (Gifu/Aichi Prefecture)
An event related to the Oku-Yahagi Forest Festival, a tour to see up-close the discharge of water from the conduit gate.
6. 5 Chubu Dams (Gifu/Aichi Prefectures)
The fact that the tour was held at different dam operators (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan Water Agency, and Kansai Electric Power Company) was highly evaluated.
■Low Water Management Award
N/A as there was not much water shortage this year
■Project Award
1. Tsuruta Dam (Kagoshima Prefecture)
Remodeling work is underway after heavy rains caused extensive damage in the past. The dam is also actively being toured.
2. Fujinuma Dam (Fukushima Prefecture)
Restoration work was carried out after the collapse caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
3. Gongen No. 1 Dam (Hyogo Prefecture)
Solar panels were installed on the downstream slope of the rock-fill dam embankment for the solar power generation project.
4. Kasabori Dam (Niigata Prefecture)
The project is undergoing a raising of the roof to enhance its flood control capacity. This is the second time that the river has been reconstructed, the first being in 1979.
5. Chugoku Region Dam Mania Certificate (River Department, Chugoku Regional Development Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism)
The Chugoku Regional Development Bureau has implemented a project in which dam cards are collected and a "Chugoku Region Dam Mania Certificate" is awarded according to the number of cards collected.
Flood Control Award
1.1130-Tokuyama Dam (Gifu Prefecture)
Although the maximum existing inflow of 1,210 m3/s was recorded during Typhoon No. 11, the flood control using the "total cut" method, the only flood control method in Japan, was highly evaluated.
2. Kagami Dam (Kochi Prefecture)
The first "proviso operation" since construction was performed during Typhoon No. 12 to protect Kochi City.
3.2322-Sameura Dam (Kochi Prefecture)
Flood control was carried out for the 100th time since the completion of the Hayamoura Dam in Typhoon No. 12 and for the 101st time in Typhoon No. 11, and the inflow was higher than that of "Legend" in 2005, when the reservoir reached 100% overnight from 0%.
4. Masaki Dam (Tokushima Prefecture)
August 10, 2012: The decisive flood control by Typhoon No. 11 was evaluated.
5. Fishery River Dam (Hokkaido)
Flood control was performed during the torrential rains in Lake Shikotsu.

Thus, following last year's Dam Award, the Japan Water Agency's dam won the Dam Grand Prize. Moreover, like last year's Hiyoshi Dam, it was a double winner, winning both the Flood Control Award and the Dam Grand Prize.
